Fans affectionately call the ground by the name “The Dragon’s Lair” based on the famous legend of St George. However, because of sponsorship reasons, the official name of St George’s Park is Axxess DSL St Georges. The first test match played at the venue was in the year 1889 between South Africa and England. The first ODI was hosted in 1992 and it was a South Africa vs India match. The stadium witnessed the 2003 Cricket World Cup and was also selected as one of the eight venues in South Africa to host the 2009 IPL match.
