Since 1925, the ground has been used for hosting first-class cricket matches by Essex County Cricket Club. It also has been the home ground of the County Club since 1967. In the initial years, the venue was used for organizing county cricket and domestic tournaments. The first match played in Essex was against Oxford University in 1925. It was in the year 1983 when the first ODI was played at the venue and it was an Australia vs India match. To date, three ODI’s have been witnessed by the stadium.
