“The Basin” or the Basin Reserve is a cricket ground in inner city Wellington, New Zealand. On the National Heritage list, the ground is recognized as the only sports ground in New Zealand and is protected under the Act of Parliament. The leveling of the ground happened due to an unexpected earthquake in 1855. 13 years later, in the year 1868, the Basin witnessed the first match on its ground which was between Wellington Volunteers and representatives of HMS Falcon. In the 20th century, a boost was noticed in the number of international matches played on the ground after the hosting of the first test match in 1930. As of now, the ground is mainly used for test matches.
