Sri Lanka National Cricket Team was eighth among other teams to achieve the status of Test-playing nation on 21 July 1981. However, it took almost 4 years for Sri Lanka to mark their first victory in Test Cricket. The match was against India and Sri Lanka won the game by 149 runs. The event happened in the year 1985 at Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium, Colombo.

The team also won their first ODI against India in Manchester, England. Later, in the year 1996, they won Cricket World Cup as well. The National Team of Sri Lanka holds multiple world records, one of them being, the world record for the highest team total in Test Cricket. As of now, the current ICC rankings of the team in Tests are 7th and 8th in ODIs and T20Is.
