In 2001, Afghanistan National Men’s Cricket Team was granted affiliate membership by the International Cricket Council. Although full membership was granted to the team by ICC in the year 2017. Two years after getting ICC affiliate membership in 2001, the team got membership in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Their superior performances were noticed in the World Cricket League, bringing the national team into the limelight.

As of January 2021, the team stands 9th among all other national teams playing T20I, holding the world record for the highest-ever T20I score. However, after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, Cricket authorities are concerned over the continued participation of the Afghanistan National Cricket Team. Though, as per the statement forwarded by the Taliban spokesperson, they would be allowing the men’s national team to play their future matches.
